Mantecaditos

Mantecaditos are classic Puerto Rican shortbread cookies with a delicious guava or sprinkled center. Perfect with coffee or hot chocolate.

Ingredients

  • cups all purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsalted butter at room temperature
  • ½ cup shortening
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract or half each of both
  • ½ teaspoon salt*

Toppings

  • colored sprinkles, guava paste or colored sugar sprinkles

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350° degrees.
    Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, mix the butter, shortening and sugar.  Whisk until light and fluffy.  About 2 minutes.
  • Add the extract, salt and flour a little at a time and whisk or use your hands until well combined and dough forms.
  • Divide dough into small balls about 1½ inch in size.
    Place balls on cookie sheet.
  • Create an indent in each cookie with your thumb forming a small well.
    Add sprinkles or a small piece of guava cube (½ inch) in the center. 
  • Bake the cookies for about 15-20 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven and let them sit on cookie sheet for 2-5 minutes before removing from cookie sheet.
    Finish cooling cookies on a wire rack to cool completely and harden some.
    Enjoy with coffee, tea or milk!

Notes

If you are using salted butter do not add the ½ teaspoon of salt, instead simply add a pinch of salt.
