    Aguas Fresas

Aguas Frescas literally means “cool waters” or “fresh waters.”

In Mexico this “agua” along with other “aguas frescas” are typical and commonly made at home as well as sold by street vendors.

Usually, aguas frescas are made using whatever fruits may be in season at the moment, which also makes this a great way to use strawberries or other fruits that are about to go bad.

Types of Aguas Frescas (with Fruit)

A few common aguas made in Mexico include:

    • Agua de Plátano-Banana Agua Fresca
    • Strawberry- this recipe!
    • Watermelon
    • Papaya
    • Mango
    • Cantaloupe
    • Guava
    • Soursop
    • Prickly Pear
    • Passion Fruit
    • Honeydew

    Sour Fruits

    • Tamarind
    • Lime
    • Lemon
    • Pineapple
    • Tamarind
    • Cucumber

    …..just to name a few.

    Other Aguas Frescas

Aguas frescas are not solely made with fruits but are also made with grains, seeds, flowers and leaves.

Here are a few well known aguas:

    • Hibiscus
    • Horchata
    • Chaya
    • Chia
    • Alfafa

    Ingredients for Agua de Fresa

    • 2 cups fresh strawberries, rinsed, stems removed and cut in half

How to Make Agua de Fresa

    1. Add strawberries to a blender with 2 cups of water and sugar. Puree until smooth.
    2. Pour the blended strawberry mixture through a wire mesh strainer directly into a pitcher or other serving container to remove seeds and pulp. Discard seeds and pulp.
    3. Add the other 2 cups of water to the pitcher and stir well.
    4. Taste for sugar, add more if needed or preferred.
    5. Serve agua de fresa immediately over plenty of ice and enjoy!

How Long Will Agua Fresca Last in the Refrigerator?

The longest I like to keep an agua fresca in the refrigerator will be 3 days.

You will notice that the fruit separates from the water a little bit after a day. To refresh, simply stir or shake pitcher.
