Agua de Plátano (Banana Agua Fresca) is a delicious refreshing drink made with a few simple ingredients and perfect anytime of the year especially on hot summer days!

Refreshing Agua de Platano (Banana Agua Fresca) served in Mason Jars and topped with fresh banana slices and cinnamon.

Ever try Agua de Plátano (Banana Agua Fresca)?  If not, you may be missing out on a delicious and refreshing drink in your life.

Agua de Plátano is a yummy refreshing Mexican drink found in Mexican homes.

This delicious concoction is also sold from the wonderful abundance of street vendors in Mexico.

If you enjoy banana smoothies, then you will love this drink.

Banana agua fresca also reminds me a lot of our delicious Puerto Rican Christmas drink “Coquito (Coconut Eggnog)” because it ‘s made with very similar ingredients with the exception of cream of coconut, coconut milk and of course the rum!

Although, Mexican do not mind adding rum to this Agua Fresca!

Refreshing Agua de Platano (Banana Agua Fresca) served in Mason Jars and topped with fresh banana slices and cinnamon.

With just two ripe bananas and a few simple ingredients you too can make this refreshing drink at home!

So What is an Agua or Agua Fresca?

Agua Frescas which is translated to “cool waters” are refreshing drinks made with different fruits, flowers, cereals or seeds.  These “aguas” are then mixed with a combination of two or more ingredients which may or may not include sugar, water, evaporated milk, condensed milk, grenadine syrup or food coloring.

    Mexican Agua Frescas

There are many Agua Frescas enjoyed in Mexico.

You will find aguas made with:

    • strawberry (recipe coming soon!)
    • bananas (this recipe!)
    • cantaloupe
    • soursop
    • watermelon (recipe coming soon!)
    • grape
    • guava (recipe coming soon!)
    • mango (recipe coming soon!)
    • prickly pear
    • orange (recipe coming soon!)
    • passion fruit
    • tamarindo (tamarind) (recipe coming soon!)
    • lemon
    • pineapple
    • jamaica (hibiscus tea)
    • horchata

    just to name a few!

For Agua de Plátano (Banana Agua Fresca) just like for other aguas frescas, you will find different variations.

This may change from one Mexican State to the next as well as from one Mexican home to the next.

Some homes use water, milk, vanilla extract and cinnamon, others use evaporated milk, condensed milk and vanilla extract while others will add red food coloring or grenadine to their mix to give it a strawberry color.

This is the version I love and enjoy….I will be adding…

Ingredients for Agua de Plátano (Banana Agua Fresca)

    • 2 ripe bananas
    • 1 can evaporated milk
    • 3 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
    • 1 teaspoon round cinnamon
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 3 cups water
    • ice

    4. Taste and if too sweet for your liking, add a little extra water.

Pour agua de plátano over ice and garnish with cinnamon and a few extra slices of banana.

    Enjoy!

Note:  My Agua de Plátano looks whiter in these pictures than yours will come out to be.  I used blue tinted Mason jars to serve which altered the color a little and made it look more like milk.  No fear, promise it does not taste like milk!  The agua truly is slightly brownish in color due to the cinnamon and sweetened condensed milk.
