These Hamburger Foil Packets (Hamburger and Potatoes) also known as Hamburger Hobo Packets or Ground Beef Hobo Packets are made with beef patties marinated in salsa verde and seasoned with Montreal steak seasoning, potatoes, veggies, cheese, butter and baked to tender perfection.  Total comfort food!  A perfect camping food too!

I cannot express how much I love these Hamburger Foil Packets otherwise known as Hamburger Hobo Packets or Ground Beef Hobo Packets.

These are so delicious and so easy to make.

This hamburger foil dinner is great to cook on the stove, oven, grill and make the most perfect Hamburger Campfire Packets as well.

Foil packets are a true favorite in my home!

Whatever you fill them with whether beef, pork, chicken or seafood, they’re just great!

Delicious, easy and comforting food in little packs!

And let’s not forget there’s no mess and makes for super easy cleanup!

I’m not sure what it is about Hobo Foil Packets but food just seems to taste so much better wrapped in foil or parchment paper.

That’s how I feel about my Tilapia en Papillote Packets (Tilapia in Parchment Packets).

Take a look at how yummy these tilapia packets are!  Stuffed with delicious flaky tilapia fillets and topped with veggies like zucchini, yellow squash, onions, tomatoes, chives and garlic.  Then seasoned simply with lemon, butter, paprika, salt and pepper.  They’re excellent!

Okay back to these yummy hamburger foil packets.

What Will you Need to Make These Hamburger Foil Packets

    • 2 beef patties (or more) I made two packets so I used one in each
    • 2 potatoes
    • ½ red or white onion
    • ½ green, red or yellow bell pepper
    • Montreal steak seasoning (what I used but you can season differently)
    • Salsa verde (could use store bought)
    • Four slices of provolone, mozzarella or havarti cheese (two slices in each packet)
    • 4 tablespoons butter (two tablespoons in each packet)
    • Salt to taste
    • Cherry peppers for topping on burgers (optional)

Vegetable spray for foil to prevent food from sticking.

How to Make These Foil Packets in the Oven

Potatoes, red onions and scalloped potatoes with marinating hamburgers on separate plates for the Hamburger Foil Packets.
Potatoes, vegetables, butter, cheese and burger inside aluminum foil ready for the oven, grill or stovetop.
Hamburger Foil Packs ready for the oven, grill or stovetop.
    • Season beef patties with the salsa verde, then sprinkle Montreal steak seasoning and salt to taste.
    • Cut your veggies into slices and then half moons.
    • Cut potato into thin slices for easier and quick cooking.

    Prepare Foil Sheets

    • Cut each foil sheet about a 2 feet in length.  This allows for you to stuff your packets comfortably.
    • Spray both sheets with vegetable spray to prevent food from sticking.

    Time to Layer!

    • Lay out one foil sheet at a time.
    • Layer the slices of one potato to the center of foil and sprinkle with salt.
    • Layer with half of the pepper and onion slices.
    • Top with two tablespoons of butter and season again with a sprinkle of salt.
    • Add two slices of cheese and top with one seasoned beef patty.
    • Top with cherry peppers (optional)
    • Now roll over the foil from one side to the other side and seal ends well.
    • Repeat process with the other foil sheet, patty and ingredients.
    • Cook both packets in the oven facing up for 35 minutes or until potatoes are tender at 375 degrees.

    Done!

Open packets gently as they will be hot and steam will flow out as you are opening them.

I like to open mine by rolling the sides of the foil down and eating right out of the packet.

For Stove Top, Grill and Campfire Cooking

    For Stove Top

After preparing foil packets, place packets in a large cast iron pan and cover with a lid.  Cook over medium heat for 35 minutes.

    For Grill

Top foil packs face up on grill and close grill lid.  Cook for 35 minutes.

    For Campfire Cooking

Place foil packs on top of grill over prepared charcoal for 35 minutes or until potatoes are tender.  Watch that packets are not over direct heat and cause packets to burn.

Other Tips for Delicious Foil Packets

Choose ground beef that’s 70/30 or 80/20 percent fat because the extra fat allows the beef patties to remain tender and not dry out.

Could also top with other delicious toppings like sliced pimiento olives.

Could also add other flavorings such as mushroom gravy soup on top of beef for extra yumminess.

The extra fat from the beef patties, butter, salsa verde and veggies creates a sort of gravy that is absolutely divine!  Total comfort food!

    Freezer Friendly

You can also freeze the packets for up to a month, just double foil or place ingredients in a plastic freezer bag and then remove and put contents in foil or parchment paper when ready to cook.  Easy peasy!
